Gornja Podgora gives you that fascinating scent of how it was half a century ago. Here is like the time stopped, these villages are still made from old stone houses, people plant their vegetables on smartly prepared terraces (watering from natural spring from Biokovo), and wild animals - believe it or not - do come to visit and eat local people's fruits!
What really thrills me every time I go there is that peace that pervades your whole body. One minute you are in totally crowded beach, people are yelling, swimming, talking, and just 5 minutes drive (or 30 minutes walk) you meet total "Zen". It is enough just to stay there and enjoy the view.
We start with a walk through an old trail called "the dead man's trail". This name comes from the old days when inhabitants were living in Upper Podgora. The graveyard was down near the sea (still is nowadays), and when someone died, they carried the dead through that trail from the Upper Podgora down to the graveyard.
On our way we will observe the vegetables that are planted around the trail. The vegetation is typical Dalmatian: olives, figs, blackberries and in private gardens you can find tangerines, oranges, lemons, apricots, raspberries, grapes, strawberries and apples. There is believe if you are skilled enough that you can live here for days and eat the fruits without carrying any of yours. We won't try that :) But interesting is that you can always pick up something to eat by the way, depending which month of the year it is - other fruit is ready for eating. This area is full of olive trees, and the oil that we get from them is the finest extra virgin olive oil you can imagine. I like to smell its fresh aroma and eat it even only with bread! Once you try the salad or fish with that oil, you'll never want any other!
